...preserving and protecting the Long Pond watershed

Special Notice:

During the summer of 2003, LPWA member Kristen Kimball conducted a survey of residents of five Cape Cod ponds. The survey explored residents' level of knowledge about the causes and prevention of nutrient pollution, their attitudes and values toward pond ecosystems, and their reports of behaviors which impact upon these ecosystems. A total of 389 surveys (over 50%) were returned.

NOTICE OF MOBILIZATION MEETING -- ALUM TREATMENT BEGINS!

MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2007 – 9 a.m.
Long Pond Drive, Harwich Public Beach Landing

ALUM TREATMENT – East Lobe – 9/13
FULL SCALE – 9/17
COMPLETION – 10/12

If you have noticed any changes in water quality, conditions, that concern you, before treatment begins, please bring them to the meeting on 9/10.
We will also ask for changes, conditions after treatment.
Alum treatment to begin in September!

LPWA member and director Carroll Johnson reports:

The Long Pond Alum treatment will start Sept 10th with a mobilization meeting at the Harwich Long Pond Beach.

Initial treatment will be in the East lobe of the pond beginning Sept 13th.  Full-scale treatment of all sections will start Sept 17th, with  completion scheduled Oct 12th.

Long Pond Watershed people with property abutting the pond are urged to now look at their shoreline for the status of existing conditions.  Please advise if you find again any dead fish.  (We found a total of 96 fish earlier this year.)  Click here to email your report to Carroll at ceejayjohn@comcast.net.

Notice the color and clarity of the water.  Is there floating green algae?  Is there any algae growth in the water?  What form and color is it?  Is it grassy or leafy?

We want a vision of conditions existing BEFORE the treatment.  We will want to know later what you observe in early October after the treatment if there are matters that concern you.

It is likely that ENSR consultant Ken Wagner will be loaded with schedules and workload, but if there is anything you find of severe and great concern you may reach him on his cell phone (508-612-5799).
